Narrative
Oral Cancer is cancer of the mouth and the most common form is squamous cell carcinoma. It is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the body. It appears to occur when the abnormal cells grow at a rapid pace and the cells don’t expire at a normal rate. It can develop anywhere in the body and we will discuss specifically oral cancers.
Oral cancer screenings are an important clinical assessment tool for the dental clinician to use to detect suspicious lesions and also can be used to educate the patient about oral cancer. Oral cancer screenings can also be taught to the patient so that they can perform them at home, especially for the high risk patient’s to help in early diagnosis.
Oral cancer screenings done on a regular basis in a clinical setting can aid in early diagnoses which in turn benefit the patient by finding lesions early. This decreases the chance of finding late stage malignancies which can lead to metastasis and ultimately mortality.
